History
Northside Hospital - Atlanta
1000 Johnson Ferry Road NE Atlanta, GA
Northside Hospital opened its doors and treated its first patient on July 6, 1970. The original 245-bed, five-story facility, located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Atlanta, opened with a 24-hour emergency department, 80 physicians and more than 400 other professionals. In the four decades since its beginning, Northside has undergone a dramatic transformation and now has nearly 2,900 physicians and 621 licensed beds in its Atlanta hospital.
Over the years, Northside has experienced numerous expansions and developments. Five years after its opening, for example, the hospital completed its Behavioral Health Wing. Radiation and CT facilities were added in 1977. By 1985, Northside's first Child Care Center was completed, and a year later the 5-story South Tower was finished. A new Emergency Department was completed in 1995, and in 2007 four floors were added to the Women's Center. In 2010 a new 36-bed Bone Marrow Transplant/ Leukemia Unit was completed. The hospital has since expanded to 621 beds with the opening of a new patient tower in 2018.

In 1946, the first hospital in Forsyth County, Georgia, the Mary Alice Hospital, was established by Dr. James Mashburn. The hospital was later bought by Georgia Baptist and renamed Baptist Medical Center. In 1999, Georgia Baptist rebuilt the hospital, and Northside Hospital acquired it in October 2002, renaming it Northside Hospital-Forsyth.
Today, the 304-bed, not-for-profit community hospital and its four adjacent medical office buildings reside on 150 acres, with more than 700,000 square feet, in Cumming. The hospital has a medical staff of nearly 2,900 physicians and 3,100 employees.
Northside Hospital-Forsyth opened its Women's Center on Aug. 6, 2008, bringing maternity and newborn services closer to home. The hospital also delivered its first baby - the first baby to be born at a Forsyth County hospital in more than 25 years. In 2013, the hospital was approved to offer a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The new designation by Georgia's Department of Community Health allows Northside Hospital-Forsyth to establish a four-bed Level-III NICU, in addition to its existing 17-bed Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit, or Level-II unit.
